Dietetic Double Standards: dat ol’ sweat sock, mane!

Spira takes a look at the way in which society constructs various ‘lenses’ to view social phenomena based upon economic class, racial boundaries, and gender roles. He is particularly interested in the way in which these dynamics affect cultural perceptions on diet and lifestyle. In this video, he considers two distinct rituals associated with the production and consumption of alcohol from two seemingly dissimilar social groups. Spira’s proposition is that an alcoholic beverage made from fermented fruit is still rotten and nasty, regardless of the value assigned to it by society.
